This hotel has been around a while, no doubt, But do not let that deter you. If you are downtown Hyatt or Omni or Marriot crowd, you will not be pleased, most likely. I can only tell you my experience. It was cool! The hotel is surrounded by lush greenery, and it seems you always come across some little waterfall. The pool is very well maintained and there are little spots with tables and chairs with a view and you can just stop and stay calm. Five of us arrived and one person at the desk. Within two minutes all five check-in stations were manned and we were on our way. It is a pretty good sized compound. Right near the interstate makes travel easy. The rooms have all new beds. Clean white linens. Clean fresh towels. Nary a bit of dirt or dust did I find. I always check the toilet. Spotless. The hotel has a Hawaiian theme. So throwback! So cool. Yeah, there is some wear, but nothing ragged at all. All rooms have a balcony with a couple chairs and a table. Who doesn't love a balcony? Fresh air . Nice little fridge and microwave. Glasses and coffee machine with real coffee cups. Every time I ran into a staff member they always greeted me with a smile. Always. Not a plastic grin from downtown, but more like "We like having you here." And they take pride in their work. The Islands bar can be pretty hopping during happy hour. 5 bucks from 4-6. Restaurant food is pretty good. Great cheeseburger cooked the way the like. It's a good kitchen. I'm not a sushi guy, but the sushi bar was doing a good business. They have a free shuttle, but not to/ from the airport. But the shuttle will take you to the mall, Old Town, Sea World, the Zoo...I think, but you have to check. I saw some conferences there and checked out the conference area. Large. Carpet was nice. Bathrooms well cleaned and big wide hallways. While it may seem dated, the elevators look over an atrium. I have never seen elevators quite like this. The location is about 10 minutes out of town. You need to take a shuttle or rent a car if you do not plan on using the shuttle, because the only place you can really walk to is a steakhouse nearby. They do have a little "Market" but it's just a convenience store. See my tips. I didn't see many kids there at all. But it is kid friendly. You will own the pool. I did see some clubs there and it looked like they could set up a bar near the pool and have drinks brought in. These are community clubs with nice people. They have a cool "Tiki hut" that I am told is open in summer. If you are interested, here is my plan. Pay a great price for relaxing, safe hotel...go to happy hour then....Uber into town...come back and relax. Shuttle for free to the attractions.

nice hotel, nice rooms, all functional with little balconies. Liked the friendly staff and comfortable beds. Slept really good and long. Rooms could be a little bigger, probably mine was a little more economic. General high quality hotel

We arrived in San Diego on a busy weekend so prices were very high all over town, much more than any of the hotels are worth. But San Diego is a jewel of a city. We took a chance on the Mission Valley Resort because of its proximity to Sea World and the hope that being a "resort" would make it a little more pleasant than competing low-priced ($200/night) hotels. We weren't sure what to expect after checking in. The room we were assigned was not prepared so we returned to the lobby. But then, some dedicated staff showed us what hospitality is all about. The registration, I believe his name is Aaron, went himself and helped to prepare another room for us. It took a little while, but the extra hard work made a big difference, providing a clean and pleasant room that was suitable for our family to get some needed rest. We had breakfast the next morning at the restaurant, which was like going back in time a few decades. We enjoyed the great food and the friendly service. It was there we learned the ownership is getting ready to tear the resort down at the end of the summer. This explains why a hotel in such a prime location and able to charge such a high rate would not spend money updating the facility. We learned to sympathize with the staff and understand why they seem disappointed with the current state of affairs. I wish them well. The management of other hotels would do well to look for Aaron and some of the others who showed what true hospitality is about under less than ideal circumstances.
