Our last-minute trip to see family coincided with several events in the area, which might be why we could not get a room in our first choice hotel. However, this is also a nice, historic building centrally located (important when travelling by train) and the price was reasonable - we booked a standard double for 2 nights. The receptionist was very welcoming, but the room was not ready so we left the luggage and went for lunch and a tour with our relative. When we returned we checked in and collected our luggage, then climbed the stairs to the 2nd floor (no lift). The staircase is wide, but winding, and there is an unexpected picture on the first floor landing which my husband rather admired. When we checked in I was frankly a bit disappointed, the room was very small, as was the shower room (effective and clean but basic) so it was lucky we were only travelling with hand luggage. Although there was a card in the room saying the windows all opened, but to fasten them to the wall to make sure the wind didn't catch them, they looked too fragile for us to risk it. (Luckily it was not very warm so we could cope with them shut but we did miss having fresh air. If it had been hot it would have been unbearable). I appreciate in an old building it is not always easy to adjust layouts and that renovations are expensive and sometimes difficult. Bed slightly soft but comfortable, would have appreciated better pillow. (It was a bit flat) After spending the evening with our relatives we came back and went into the bar for a beer each. The barmaid was unable to take cash or card so we had to put it on our room, and it was lucky we ordered large beers as she left as soon as she had served them (it was 10pm on a Thursday night). They were nice beers! In fairness, on the way out we noticed an honour bar on reception, but we had been up since 3am so really didn't want anything further. In the morning we went to breakfast, which is served in what looks like a function suite - the lighting is quite stylish but the chairs and leather-effect table covers are ready for a refresh. There was a good typical buffet breakfast, the breads were very nice, as were the pastries. I didn't have any of the hot dishes - ramekins of scrambled egg with bacon on top (bit dry), a sort of liver pate with mushrooms on the top and boiled eggs (tucked under a napkin so I missed these the first day and forgot the second!) Cinnamon pastries were nice. There were no "English" teas, but 3 jars of various loose black teas - Earl Grey, one which smelled of aniseed and one which was faintly floral. (You make up your own teabag with your choice of leaves, but because the hot water is in flasks it doesn't brew very well). The breakfast was the same the next day - still OK, still nice bread. When we checked out the receptionist offered us an umbrella as the forecast was rainy. We explained we were going back to England the next day but she said "its fine, take one of the red and white umbrellas, I've just put them out". As we had raincoats and no free hands we declined, but it was typical of the helpful service. The atmosphere in the hotel is very pleasant, and it certainly grew on me (it reminded me a bit of hotels I stayed in when travelling for work in the 1990s). We didn't try the restaurant in the wine cellar, but there seems to be a set menu depending on the day. A good solid hotel which only needs some investment to make it really comfortable.

“Central location, difficult parking”

The hotel has a central location in Næstved right beside the church. When arriving saturday evening all parking spaces closeby were occupied, we finally found space about 10 min away. The rom was nice, maybe a bit outdated, located directly under the roof, it was very warm, even the weather wasn't. The staff was friendly and breakfast good, Wifi worked fine.

“Faded Charm (in need of TLC).”

It is maybe a bit generous giving Hotel Vinhuset a 4 rating, maybe a 3.5 would be more suitable. The building has been operated as a hotel since 1778, and has an interesting history dating back to the 16th century. This hotel has a lot of potential. It is ideally situated in Sct Peders Kirkeplads, surrounded by many other old historic buildings. There are many positive features about this establishment. The location for one, it is not far from the town centre and various local attractions. There is a welcoming dining area from which we were able to choose from a well prepared, varied menu, (typical, delicious Danish fare). The interior is a bit less than what you would expect, it is a Heritage Building. There is a beautiful winding staircase, unfortunately, it is needing a bit of TLC. We stayed on the first floor, here we were greeted by the large painting of "The Woman", a bit of an eyepopper. The painting doesn’t match or enhance the surroundings; however, I would say with a smile, please keep it! The staff we had contact with, were also an asset. We would like to pass on our thanks to Gabriella, all the best! There was free parking available, some convenient, some not so. The wifi was free and worked well. The hotel has its charm, we would stay again, but we would only hope that the owners would spruce things up, do justice to this old building. As alluded to, the building inside is getting a bit tired looking and the outside needs a bit of work. (Do note however, things were clean and tidy). The window ledge outside our room was rotting away, and the window itself needed to be "modernized". Our room itself was clean and comfortable, the bathroom clean and adequate. That being said, the room, however, was quite dated, the plaster on the walls needed a few repairs, and a new, more modern paint job. The large Lord of the Rings framed poster over the bed also seemed "out of place". This is all meant to be constructive criticism, as is noted, the property has a lot of potential. I guess maybe the improvements might raise the cost of staying here, or maybe not. As it was, the rates were not low, but perhaps reasonable when you factor in the delicious breakfast that was included. One last suggestion might also include the installation of a lift, a small one even. One thing that cannot be improved upon however, is the location, Naestved itself and the surrounding area. This is the lovely Danish countryside where my Dad and his family grew up and some are still living. You can visit some of Denmark's old churches, Sct Peders Kirke, located steps away from the Vinhuset, is Naestved's largest church, scarcely altered since 1375. A short distance away is Sct Mortens, dating back to ca. 1280. You can visit Herlufsholm, the site of another old church, and a private boarding school dating back to 1565. A short drive out of town is the estate, Gisselfeld. Here you can tour the beautiful gardens and partake in some local history. If you want a bit of beach time, take a short drive out to the touristy and inviting little town of Karrebaekminde. If you desire a bit of nature, you can canoe or fish on Denmark's third largest river, the River Susa. There is much to see and do in the area. We don't wish to judge Hotel Vinhuset too harshly, our stay in the area was pleasant and the hotel served our needs. Our comments are meant to be honest and constructive. P.S. Reception is only open during the day, and it was impossible to find my room without help, as it was out back, through a courtyard and on a different entrance of - with no signs telling you where to go for those rooms. Parking is bad. Big parkingarea nearby, but it serves two hotels plus anyone who wants to visit the city centre. So no guarantee that you'll get a space. My room was ground floor right next to the entrance to the backyard building - would have been nice with some window film to get some privacy without having to have the curtains closed the whole time. It sounds like I'm all negative, but I'm not. It's a perfectly nice place to stay for a visit in Næstvedt and the surrounding areas. I was allowed to bring my dog, the room was big and clean, and the breakfast was more than acceptable. Big park perfect for running/walking the dog close by.
