“Clean accommodation, located quite a way out of town.”

My husband and I spent the second point of our 4 area trip around Dalmatia at these apartments. Following a short 2 night stay in Split we arrived at the bus station just before midday and called the apartments to ask if we could check in straight away. We were kindly met by a friendly lady in her car who drove us to the apartments-and we could see why she wanted to do so! They are a fair way uphill-almost half way up the mountain. We were rather aghast by the winding uphill drive to fnd ourselves outside a rather unimposing block of apartments. rRather than us being in the man block we were lead around the back to a 'granny flat' which was clean and functional with a 4 ring cooker/oven, fridge, large double bed and adjoining bathroom. We also had a large tv in the kitchen and a dining table and literature on Makarska was provided in the room. We noticed during our stay that the further up the mountain you are the more likely you'll be woken in the night by ferocious and sudden gusts of high mountain wind! Luckily this dies down after a few minutes. I suppose it gets your washing dried quickly. Makarska itself is not quite what we expected. Being a former travel consultant I had admired the resort for years, but found it to be nothing more than a small historical centre flanked by tourist trap shops, bars and restaurants not to mention several large hotels that dominate the skyline. The long narrow beach along the bay is chocka-block with tourists as we found on that first day, so if you'd like a nice bit of peace and a swim without being disturbed by overexcited children and pumping disco music head to the headland accross the bay where you will find rocky outcrops with flat bathing platforms with direct access to the water. This becomes quieter as you come around the headland, towards the harbour and inevitably you will find nudists here however the water is nice and deep, it is quiet and a nice walk through the wooded parkland area, past the St. Peter statue will bring you into Makarska centre for a refreshing drink. Overall, I would reccommend these apartments shold you not mind a good 25 minute walk downhill (and a 40 minute walk uphill afterwards!) to the beach and centre. the nearest supermarket is at least 15 minutes walk away on the main road, so stock up as you pass by. The streets surrounding the apartments are reasonably well lit and feel safe, even late at night. Also be aware that for short stays of less than 7 nights, staff tend not to service your room in any way so be prepared to make your own bed, ask for clean towels if required and take your bins out daily.

When we arrived at the Ferry port from Brac we text Damir and were picked up with in 15mins. This was vital as the apartments are a bit out of town and up hill all the way. On arrival we were told that the previous tenant had had a problem with their passport and need to stay another night so would we mind staying at an alternative apartment for one night. Due to the circumstances we said ok but thought the other people should have moved. The alternative apartment was awful; a one-room bedsit with in someone’s apartment, we just changed and went out. We were moved early the next day and the apartment we booked was so much better, a good size, clean and comfortable. The room had a good size balcony and from the high up vantage point you get an ok view. The down side is that the building itself looks unfinished with some of the walls not rendered and the walls that are rendered are not all painted. We found the location ok but are a relatively young and fit couple so did not mind walking. Even so the walk back from the beach will keep you fit! as it is all up hill and quite steep. Makarska beach is quite nice but gets very full so for a couple of days we caught the bus to Brela. The buses seemed to go every 30mins or so and cost 17kn out but only 10kn on the way back? (total was approx £3.50). Brela’s beaches and lovely but you earn the views on the way back to the bus as it’s up another very steep hill. The day before departure we went to settle the bill and after what had happen at the very least expected a reduction for the first night. This was not forthcoming and the owner told me she had had to pay the owner of the other apartment the same rate. We found this extremely hard to believe and even if it was the case we still should not have been charged the full cost. We think they just saw it as an opportunity to make more money.

We arrived into Makarska by bus. If you give the apartments a call they will come and collect you to take you there - although it is only a few minutes walk away, it is uphill most of the way, so if you have luggage of reasonable weight this is very handy. Even if not, it's the easiest way to find where you are staying. After climbing out of the vintage Yugo we were shown to our apartment which was clean and contained a kitchen area, bathroom and bedroom; all of which were of a decent size. It was absolutely fine for the two of us, but there was an extra bed in there (and seemingly a smaller pull out one under that) and I suspect it could get somewhat cramped with three plus. We used the electric hob & grill in the kitchen which worked fine. If you need to use the gas hobs you will need to bring some matches with you (assuming each apartment is the same lay out) which is no doubt a much quicker way to boil water than the electric ones. Having said that, our gas hobs were seemingly out of use anyway. Bathroom was adequate with toilet, sink and shower. Only issue was the shower curtain was too small for the shower, so the surrounding floor and towels got a good soaking - they dried off quick enough outside though… bar the day we experienced massive downpours. Bedroom had no air-con, but did have a fan; the apartment itself was behind another though, so didn't get exceedingly hot anyway. Bed was spacious enough, but the pillows were filled with chunks of foam. I didn't have a problem with them, but they may take some getting used to. The apartments are quite definitely based uphill, so may not be suitable for all, and it is only a 10/15 minute walk bang into the centre of Makarska. There is a nice pizza restaurant/bar based at the bottom of the hill if you want to break the walk up, but it honestly isn't bad. We walked back as well, but it wouldn't be much in a taxi if you really can't face it. If you walk the opposite direction from the apartments (going right) heading downhill you will reach the nearest beach. These get massively crammed, so I would recommend instead to head downhill towards the centre, but to cross at the bottom of the hill. This will take you to a beach, but follow this to the left and you will reach some bathing platforms on the rocks and these are much better, particularly if you follow round the headland and away from the crowds, but before the nudist area (unless this is your preference, of course).
