“Pretty good value, good location”

I was in town for the music festival, Iceland Airwaves, and on a self-imposed budget. This hotel isn't expensive by Icelandic standards though you pay extra (12 euros) for a filling but fairly basic continental breakfast. I was reminded of the Hotel Els-Bels in 'Carry on Abroad' because the Manager, Siggi, was the only staff member I ever saw there. Good location just two minutes from Ingolfur Square in downtown Reykjavik in a quiet residential area of the old West Side with plenty of interesting Icelandic houses in the vicinity for those that are interested in that sort of thing. Nearest airport transfer drop-off/pick up location is the Hotel Marina about three minutes walk away. Rooms are ok for the price, comfortable bed, desk, big wall-mounted TV screen with UK channels (BBC/ITV/C4) including HD versions but they were the only ones I could pick up. Wifi in the rooms. Adequate double glazing, heating and hot water (it was freezing outside). My fourth (top) floor room had a good view of Mount Esja. Public areas a bit worn but not an issue. The only other residents when I was there were Icelanders, I don't think this place is well known internationally, which can be a benefit as it was very quiet. There's a lift, it works and it is prompt. A bit scary as it seems to fall back a few inches when you step out of it. One problem is that there are no electronic door systems in place. You rely on old metal locks for security and have to be sure the door is locked on exit Also, you will be given a key for the main entrance door. Don't go out without it because if you come back after 10 pm when the reception is unmanned without it you won't be getting back in until 8 am and you'll quickly find out why it's called Iceland. Overall, pretty good value I reckon. I'd be happy to go back again.

Everyone knows that Reykjavik is a ridiculously expensive city, especially downtown. I stayed at Metropolitan hotel on Saturday and Sunday night, it’s located on a quiet side street literally 3 minutes walk from the centre, for 99 euros in total. Now that’s like hitting the jackpot! Ok, the room wasn’t big and it was basic. The bathroom was small and shower narrow. But everything was clean, the bed was comfy and I could have the window open with minimal noises from the outside. Tv with international channels. All I needed for a short stay. The downside: hallways look worn and pillow was not good. Staff I met were helpful. I’m happy to return.

“Basic clean room ”

The hotel is very close to the major tourist attractions. The accommodation is basic but clean. Breakfast is limited. If you need an affordable hotel with a private bathroom in Iceland, this is one of the best options.
