Walking the Camino, this was our first stop out of Porto. It took us almost an hour to find it (mostly due to the vague walking notes by our tour company), but it was definitely worth it. An absolutely gorgeously-restored Quinta on the rural backroads of Fajozes. The grounds were beautiful and featured lots of native trees and a sparkling pool. Teresa was a great host. She could tell we were absolutely beat after our walk, and showed us right to our room and let us nap. Our room has plenty of space to relax and a footbath, which I took advantage of right away. We opted for a light dinner in the village (and the locals there were extremely friendly and accommodating), but I heard from another guest that the spread was fabulous. There was some very loud, very weird squawking in the middle of the night, and I asked Teresa the next morning what was making all that racket. Apparently, the neighbors had peacocks and the males were calling out to the females. (I can feel your pain, bro) Breakfast was served in the poolhouse and was a fairly typical Portuguese breakfast with cereal, pastries, yogurt, fruit and (of course) ham and cheese. If I ever make it back to Porto, I would definitely make a pitstop in Fajozes and stay in Quinta das Alfaias.

I wasn't sure I'd like this old house at first as being solo, I prefer to be in the main house or a hotel. However it has a colonial feel about it and our hostess, Theresa was such an easy going and friendly person, I was soon comfortably chatting and drinking wine with other guests. The rooms are separated from the big house and you have your own front door. The rooms are well furnished with everything you need and I was grateful that there were heaters in the bedroom and bathroom after walking on the Camino. The meal was delicious and served at a beautiful table in a spacious dining room and breakfast which was equally good is served in a garden style of room which was also very pleasant. Theresa kindly took us to the start of the Camino after breakfast and nothing was too much trouble.

Our first night stay after leaving Porto on the Camino Way northbound we arrived in Fajorzes after 24km and behind closed gates was a 'secret garden' type guest house with outdoor pool, shaded veranda, beautiful gardens and a warm welcome . Theresa met us and showed us around the guest house and to our chalet/cottage. Dinner was served at a time that suited us and we were served a Portuguese traditional meal which was accompanied by white port and red wine from the region. Of all the places we stayed in on our route we loved here, definitely the best overall

My Wife and I have been coming here for the last 10 yrs. We originally stayed here with both of our children when they were in their teens. I can say without doubt that Teresa is the finest people that you are ever likely to meet. My wife suffers from coeliac disease and cannot eat food containing gluten. Teresa had asked in passing about it as my wife had to take her bread with her as it was quiet hard to find gluten free products 10 yrs ago as it was not as fashionable as it is today. Teresa went out of her way to accommodate my wife and every year seems to have sourced something new from a gluten free Bakery in Vila do Conde. We have great memories of this wonderful lady and her wonderful house and gardens. Teresa is a great source of knowledge of the area and where to visit and every year we have visited fabulous areas that she has recommended. Teresa speaks a number of languages including English, Spanish, Italian, German and of course Portuguese. It is best to have a car if you are staying for a while but we have managed without one as there is a local Taxi service and the Metro is 5 mins away by taxi. There is a local shop about 5 mins walk and a local bar another 2 mins away from that. There are plenty of restaurants in the area and few within 5 mins by car. There is outlet shopping within 7 mins drive and free parking at the local metro station where you can get a direct metro to Porto (around 30 mins on metro) We had some wonderful meals here on the Colonial Veranda which is a little bit of heaven at sunset looking out onto the beautiful garden.
