Trogon Lodge is remote, in the mountains and we were glad to have a driver to navigate the weather and route, especially the final few kms which are rougher roads. We stayed in early May and had a couple of rainy afternoons / evenings but bright sunny mornings. Temperatures comfortable, warm to cool but not cold. The lodge is set in beautiful grounds by the river, a really lovely setting, birds everywhere and the rooms are compact and traditional. Comfortable and with everything you need. The food was very good – generous portions and quite rich so we didn’t have 3 courses at dinner. Breakfasts were delicious, and coffee is available before the early morning walks too. We had a power cut one evening, so keep your phone or a torch handy! The restaurant was fully functional though, and candlelit. We enjoyed walking the forest trails, early-morning (successful!) Quetzal Quest with Grievin and just sitting on the deck of the bar watching the birds – raining or sunny, very tranquil.

Finally, reading other peoples reviews, now I understand why they say that they wish they were staying more than one night. This place is hidden gem. If you are a birdwatcher, nature lover, or just needing a place to reCharge – this is the place for you. It is a little bit off the road – and upon driving into the location at night; the reports of steep hairpin roads do not lie. If you’re heading to this location please make it before it gets dark at 5:30 pm - the alternate benefit to this is that you actually get to see how gorgeous the grounds are before you settle in for the evening. The manager of the location is fabulous. Very gentle and soft-spoken, But yet very informative and present. Upon arriving late – the hot water bottles were already in our bed – I need to get me some of those – and instructions on how to turn the electric heater in the room was given. Even though it gets dark pretty early so; still could have chosen many things to do in the evening to spend your time. Upon further travels in Costa Rica, it appears that everything is early to rise,early to bed . I would actually call this hotel boutique – the decor inside the restaurant area as well as a gathering area,or community room, is one of old world charm. Warm tones and comfort every where. Bring cards !! Or maybe travel games. The community room has many separate areas that you can spend hours in while having the convenience of wifii and a bar/ coffee counter. Pool table ‘ of old world charm.

“Very special quetzal experience - thankyou Greivin!”

Thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay, and the hot water bottles delivered to our room on chilly nights! An extra ‘Thankyou’ to Greivin who spent time to give us a special view of the quetzal, with spectacular photos. Thankyou Greivin - an experience we won’t forget!
