“Top Choice in Vienna”

This is my second long-ish stay at the Hotel in three months. It ticks all boxes! For starters, its location could not be better. Rooms are very comfortable and the hotel offers all the things one would expect from a 5 Star Hotel. The breakfast buffet is excellent and more than fulsome. Perhaps the only thing missing is that the hotel's restaurant isn't open in the evening. Then again there is the Bar at the hotel and innumerable good restaurants in Vienna.

There is no doubt the location is great - central but quiet. The building is lovely. But the rooms are very small, though nicely decorated and equipped. The lobby is nice. However, it was really disappointing when the hotel wouldn't budge to change my booking by a day - even though they admittedly had space - because it was booked with an online travel agency, which they said could only be the ones to approve the change. Of course, the online agency was impossible to reach (note: always book directly with hotels and airlines these days). But just a few days early the same situation happened at another hotel in the area and that hotel was happy to accommodate this move. Steigenberger's resistance to help felt mendacious and stingy.

We came to this hotel for a special event and I had selected it from a 5* hotel list. That was not a good move. We had ordered a luxury room and had also purchased an upgrade to a high floor for a better view. Not a good move. The room was small and the view was zero. So I complained and we got a bigger corner room with a view. One cannot say the hotel is bad but it is not 5*. The shower is a flexible one inside a bath - in a tiny bathroom. For a 5* hotel you would expect something significantly grander. The entrance hall is ok but surely not worthy of a 5*. But the hotel was clean - the staff friendly - the breakfast buffet really good and the location excellent. So it is definitely ok - but it you think you are treating yourself to a 5* experience - like several booking sites advocate it - you are mistaken.
