There are a number of things that could be improved: No individual toiletries which I expect from a 4 star hotel. No big hook at the door to hang the ski jacket. You have to use the normal hangers. There are a number of things that could be improved: No individual toiletries which I expect from a 4 star hotel. No big hook at the door to hang the ski jacket. You have to use the normal hangers. No drawer in the bedside table. Only one comfy chair in a double room. The room was amply spacious and could have easily had two comfy chairs. These are pretty minor in the scheme of things. What we liked: The view of the Matterhorn from our balcony, particularly at sunrise. We were on half board and the food was excellent. The staff were all very helpful. Good facilities - hot tub, pool, games room. The lounge was very cosy with a log fire. Afternoon tea. The Gornergrat train and the Sunegga funicular are short walks away, about 5 and 12 minutes respectively. The glacier express is at the other side of town and we took the bus.

The Alpen Resort is an excellent option for hearty skiers who like a good spa. The hotel is very close to the train station and a 10 minute walk to the main parts of the town. Skiing is a short free bus ride away. The bus takes you to the Sunnega area that has a 100 yard tunnel to the train or to the Glacial Paradise area that has a 30 minute gondolla to the top. From the hotel, you need to be able to walk in boots and carry your gear quite a distance which might be challenging for some people and young families. The hotel will also arrange a local taxi from the hotel to the mountain for 20 swiss francs, which might be a little easier. I would also recommend downloading the matterhorn app as this is essential for mountain lift details. You can rent excellent gear nearby with a 10% hotel discount. The staff is super friendly, but I think few of them actually ski. We use the gorgeous and newly renovated spa every day and I had an excellent massage. The complementary breakfast is hearty and kept as full most of the day. Thanks for a great stay. We'd return in a minute!

We wanted to visit Zermatt in the winter, to enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Matterhorn, and the Alpen Resort hotel boasted views of the mountain and we were not disappointed. The hotel is located about 4mins walk from the railway station - but we never heard any noise from the railway. This means it is pretty much at the "back" of the town, compared to the main chairlifts .. but if you want to take the cog train up the Gornergrat mountain, this is right opposite the station. The hotel itself was spotlessly clean and comfortable. We booked a panoramic bedroom which was very large ... featuring a king bed and a sofa area as well as a balcony that looked towards the Matterhorn. The hotel is formed of the two large buildings shown on the listing image, connected by the restaurant on one side. There is an outside spa pool and indoors spa area. In the basement there is a games room with ping pong, football tables and a pool table. Adjacent is the ski room with lockers. The bed was comfortable and the hotel offers a "pillow menu" (which we did not use). The bed linen provided warm individual duvets. TV in the room offered a surprising selection of UK TV, which is not what we have come to expect from European locations.. BBC1,2, ITV1.2.3.4 , Film channels, and the option to link your own device to the TV. Breakfast was the usual pan-European fare with cold cuts of meat and cheese, continental style pastries and cereals, as well as bacon, swiss style sausages and scrambled eggs. The hot drinks were provided by a coffee machine - which seems to be a standard offering in most places in the town! Staff were all very helpful and friendly and we would not hesitate to re-book if we ever return to the town. Incidentally, the rail connections to Zermatt are really good - we flew into Geneva, caught the train from the airport which took us to the town of Visp. where we changed to get the train into Zermatt. Lovely alpine views all along the route.
