If you need Wifi everywhere, newly renovated rooms with a modern touch and the general look and feel of a big chain hotel - you'll be disappointed. If you like good food, good wine, a nice spa area and an inimitable experience - you'll be more than satifsfied. At hotel nicolay, 1860 meets 1881 meets 1900 meets 1990 meets 2020. The family run hotel is full of little glimpses into its long past and in constant change. While the quite big SPA Area looks like a small modern and tastefull wellnes club, the dining hall hasn't really changed much since 1960. You'll be served coffee from a coffeepot and you'll dine with silver cuttlery. The stairway thou looks like 1950 and the elevator looks like 1970 from the outside and 1990 from the inside. The owner is also the chef and he and his girlfriend mainly run the restaurants. They are supported by his parents. Both generations compete at a game of "who's the most funny and charming" and they are both winning. You won't get the fake smile you know from big hotels but you'll get honest hospitality instead. Foodwise you can choose between vegan fast food or vegan top cuisine with dishes like "Smoked avocado with quinoa chia seeds in a lemon capellini coat with garlic and herb tomatoes". The Breakfast ist lavish and full of suprises like vegan salmon made from carrots or self made vegan mozzarella. My mom has been a meat eater her whole life and she was amazed at how much she loved the food. If you're not vegan, do not be affraid. Your tastebuds will be more than staisfied. The wine - weather you're vegan or not - is a unique experience as well. The Hotel is supplied by a local (500m down the street) vegan winery that hand picks and sorts the grapes for its wine. The old owner talks about grapes like other people talk about their children. This wine definately is made with love. And since it is not filtered using animal products but instead uses had sorted grapes - it doesn't have any rotten grapes in it and thus leaves you without any headaches. The area is great for running, cycling, hiking and walking. Or for just strolling thru the tiny old town along the river. We've been there as a couple and loved it, we returned as a family with a two year old child and my mother and loved it as well. And we'll definetly come back another time.

Lovely to find a fully vegan hotel, it's a traditional old hotel with a faded old-fashioned charm. We were slightly disappointed with our outdated room and bathroom which had a small ancient cathode ray tube tv! Having looked at the photos of the rooms on their website, we expected to have one of those rooms but what we got was nothing like the photos. However, the beds were comfortable if a bit firm, it was clean and there were two easy chairs and a table. We had the B&B plus evening meal deal on a Tuesday which is their rest day so it was quiet in the dining room and we had a delicious meal, it was a set menu. The breakfast was something else, totally amazing huge choice, you can make your own fresh orange juice, grind seeds and eat as much as you like from the frequently replenished buffet. Fabulous experience! We weren't able to make use of the spa/pool but intend to stay at Nicolay again some day and do so.

The idea of a vegan hotel in the Mosel area as an alternative is great, but the hotel lacks substance. The room was dated without any amenities. The hotel is located on a busy street with lots of road noise. The staff was friendly. The food is ok, not a lot of seasonings and none extra were offered. Wifi shuts off at night, and you have to pick a time slot to have breakfast. Wouldn't stay there again.
