The unusual attractiveness of Laguardia makes it rather more expensive than you’d expect for rural Spain, so we weren’t sure what to expect from Marita - but we were delighted. The location is perfect ... as the description says, it’s just outside the old town. In fact it’s on the town hill, just outside the town wall opposite one of the gates - making it about 3 minutes from (misnamed) Plaza Mayor. Rooms on one side of the hotel have balconies overlooking the old town, while on the other side they overlook the plains, vineyards, and lagoon. The room was a generous size, and very comfortable, clean and attractively decorated, as was the ensuite - I imagine the accommodation floor has been refurbished relatively recently, and they’ve done a very good job. The staff were very friendly and helpful ... although, as a small business, it doesn’t have many staff on duty and occasionally you might have to wait a little for attention. The only downside was the lack of a lift ... the reception is on the first floor, and the rooms up another floor ... but staff were very ready to help with luggage. Breakfast was the standard fresh orange juice with tostada and choice of hot drink - but included ham (or cheese on request), so the 5€ cost was similar to what you’d pay elsewhere in the town (it also included pulped tomato and olive oil, a Spanish breakfast choice that we like). On a good morning you’d be offered a refill of your coffee, but unfortunately this didn’t always happen. We didn’t get to try the restaurant - unusually, it wasn’t open for two night of our stay - but we did notice that it commands stunning views overlooking the plains below the town. Lots to see. Recommend a wine tasting tour underneath the town in the tunnels. The only bad experience in Spain was the car - DO NOT rent from Goldcar. They basically stole $228 from me with added charges that were not asked for (fuel return and a wifi system that I did not even know I had or was paying for)

“Fine just a lift missing ”

We were there one night , hotel is centric but is has no parking so it can be a bit hard to find one nearby. Staff are nice, but there is no lift to get neither reception or rooms and with and elderly aunt traveling with us that would have been necessary. Breakfast is good but dinner a bit overrate… more

The young women who fielded us on arrival could not have been more helpful. We expected the absence of lift to room level. The retro-fitted air conditioning in the room worked, there was no evidence of any a/c on staircase or landings. The loo seat refused to stay vertical, inconvenient for men. Laguardia attracts plenty of visitors so prices might be higher than in the surrounding area and contribute to a less than value for money verdict. However, the hotel restaurant was a disappointment; the window view was clear, the meal indifferent and the old-fashioned pecking-order of the waiting team might have been amusing - if it had not been irritating. We were very surprised to find chunks of bread already set out on our side-plates, needless to say they were already hardened by the heat in the room and did not tempt us - although they did appear as 2€s on our 65€ lunch bill. Shortly after our arrival, the windows were, belatedly, closed against the summer sun. This seems a place rather too sure of itself in outward show with little of true substance for us to recommend to others. Does it survive on single stays in this remote area and be therefore disinclined to work at a level that encourages a loyal following, I wonder.
