We stayed here during the World Cup and we had previously heard it wasn't safe in this area. The walk from the train to the hotel was interesting, as our clothing gave away the fact that we were tourists. The locals were nice, and guided us in the right direction. The staff were great, most spoke English and were very helpful. The room was pretty dismal, however. Noticeable stains were on the bedsheets. We slept on top of the blankets anyways, also because there was no air conditioning. What was odd to me was the bathroom was almost the same size of the room. The bathroom could have used a little work. We went out at night, and we were fine. However, I would recommend being very careful if you decide to do this. For the price, this was a good stay for us in Rio. They also had free Wifi.

I stayed here during the World Cup as it was a reasonably priced hotel. First thing to note is this is located in the centro area of Rio. Not the best place to be walking around on your own at night time, but not as bad as people suggest. Most tourists stay in ipanema/copacabana area. A taxi to this area will cost you between 30-40 real. The hotel is basic but clean and front desk staff are helpful, friendly and speak english. It appears that they are working hard on improving the quality of rooms and standards. We stayed in a triple room. I must say it is a tight fit for 3 people, with 3 single beds and not much room for anything else! Luckily one of my friends came late, so it was just two of us, so the room was in that case more than big enough. There is a tv with local channels and one wardrobe. The bathroom is tatty and could do with an urgent update. There were broken tiles behind the sink (which could have easily been discarded by staff) The shower was hot and functional, the toilet was a bit weak and flimsy. The included breakfast was mainly made up of instant coffee, squash like drinks, breads (toast, french bread, brioche) ham, cheese and a local cake. Its basic, but does the job. If you want a cheap functional place to stay then this is more than adequate. I would liken it to a western 2 star hotel, or perhaps a travelodge.
