“Nice and clean”

The hotel is beautiful and clean, characterized by a beautiful heritage design, and it is close to the city center. The food is delicious and the prices are generally good. Electricity is available around the clock, also the internet, and the rest of the services are nice and helpful staff

Lovely old building and beautifully renovated but if you are looking for a London-type boutique hotel with all the extras this isn't it. But it is lovely. Hard beds and pillows like every other bed except one that we slept in during our trip to Syria and Jordan. Interesting room which had "windows" onto the central restaurant area which meant it was very noisy. Food good but nothing special. Atmosphere lovely as there were a lot of locals eating there and not many other tourists. During supper I was fascinated by a strange clacking sound which turned out to a man in a side room weaving. He was charming and we bought a selection of cotton rugs, mats and table cloths. Yes it is a walk into town and we did just that the evening we arrived. Walked through a maze of market stalls and were called into one of the shops making the sweet delicacies that the town is famous for. They made us taste everything in the shop and after we had bought a couple of boxes they then gave us more. And that was before dinner.

The Orient House is on a quiet side street in a renovated old Ottoman mansion, about a 10-15 minute walk from the center of town and its famous water wheels. The hotel has a beautiful lobby area with a 3-story atrium centered on a fountain and pool, decorated in marble and wood covered with Islamic geometric patterns. The reception staff was friendly and helpful, and there is free wifi in the lobby as well as the rooms. My wife and I stayed here twice in April ‘11, once on our way to Aleppo, and again several days later when desert storms prevented us from reaching Palmyra. Our first room (#215) was a huge corner suite decorated in rich Ottoman style. It had a comfortable double bed, but the pillows were low and hard. There was a central table with four chairs, two arm chairs, a credenza, and a small fridge. The bathroom was adequate sized with a fair amount of counter space. It had a tub/shower combo. The second room was smaller and overlooked the front of the hotel from a small alcove. It was also attractively furnished and quite comfortable. Dinner at the hotel restaurant was excellent, and we chose to eat there both times. We consider these as two of the best meals on our month-long trip. Breakfast was pre-set and adequate – olives, yogurt, bread, cucumbers & tomatoes, boiled eggs. As we found quite often on our trip, there was juice but no fruit. We liked the Orient House very much. Perhaps the only downside is that is a bit removed from the center of town, but it has plenty to compensate for that and we recommend it.

Within walking distance to the center and water wheels but will take ca. 25 minutes. Very nice courtyard. We stayed one night on our way to Aleppo and another night when coming back. Both rooms without window but comfortable, not too small. Some bathrooms seem to be a bit basic but the rooms and bathrooms where clean. Buffet breakfast was nice with fruit, cereal, eggs etc. Dinner was nice with pizza for the kids and a choice of arabian dishes. A lot of tour groups are staying in the hotel.
