“Its Greece....”

Just come back from a great 2 week stay at Anthoula, a typical 2/3* Greek hotel. As usual I notice some negative reviews from folks who have either; 1) Never been to Greece and assume its like the Costas/Canaries 2) Haven't read the hotel info at booking and done no research 3) Have expectations way above a Greek 2/3* hotel will offer. So for the umpteenth time, in my experience; NEVER been anywhere where you don't have to pay for a safe. NEVER been anywhere in Greece where you don't pay for aircon, its very expensive to run. The hotel info CLEARLY states this. The tour operators shaft these hotels by block booking rooms at much lower rates than you would pay booking direct to keep the cost of YOUR holiday down, so the hotel has to regain cash somehow. NEVER been anywhere in Greece where there is constant hot water, its solar heated (like everywhere in Greece) no sun-no hot water, and once its gone its gone, and has to reheat, who wants a hot shower when its 30+ ????? NEVER been anywhere in Greece since the introduction of the tourist tax, where on arrival you are NOT told this tax has to be paid in CASH, its not the hotel money grabbing but informing those ignorant of this before any surprises at checkout. This is a tax levied on you the customer, not the hotel, and is paid in cash everywhere we have been. No pay tax no go home. The breakfast her is typical for a 2/3* hotel, bread, toast, cheese, 'ham', coffee, tea, orange DRINK, and other bits and bobs. Cooked breakfast is available for a price, same as everywhere we have been to. For the self styled coffee and orange juice aficionados, and those who perceive themselves as having a more discerning and refined palate than the average Joe, you WILL be disappointed. Our room (22) was clean and tidy, with bedding/towels changed every 2 or 3 days, and mountain views. Plenty of wardrobe space for us (18kg and 17kg) however if you have a baggage train that Naomi Campbell proud of you may struggle. The bathroom was typically small and basically a 'wet room'. The shower area is small, the overhead shower head was the size of a dustbin lid, very little water came out, what did went everywhere but down, so we had to use the hand shower (don't forget to move the toilet roll) but this was no big deal. The hotel is on a hillside as CLEARLY stated in the hotel info, its not steep, I'm 66 and manged go down and up twice a day no bother. The pool was fine with plenty of sunbeds. The hotel staff were friendly, and helpful when needed, NO short tempers or rudeness here. There is an old guy there who cannot speak English, but that's not his fault is it. So to sum up for the umpteenth time ...... If you think Greece is the same as the Costas/Canaries think gain. Don't blame the hotel for YOU failing to read the hotel info and lack of research, then you wont make a fool of yourself or look stupid. If you don't want to pay for a safe or aircon, want constant hot water, want enough wardrobe space for your baggage train, have the finest coffee and orange juice freshly plucked from the tree, don't have to pay for cooked food, get a breakfast that will satisfy your finely honed and cultured taste buds..eggs benedict perhaps, want everyone to speak English, a huge shower, bedding/towels changed everyday, then I would strongly suggest you pay £1,000-£3,000pp more and go 5* and you just MAY get all your wishes. Failing that don't go to Greece.

“Nice 2* but with a few issues”

Stayed here in July for 2 weeks with my Wife, Daughter and father in law. Positives.. Pool is a nice size, clean with plenty of beds available at all times of day. Lunch/ snacks on offer were good if you didn't want to venture out. Can use inflatables so my 13yr old loved it. Friendly staff at the pool bar. Rooms were cleaned regularly and had good facilities. Modern bathrooms and we all had hot water when needed. Negatives.. On arrival (1pm) we were bluntly told our room was not ready and we will have to wait 6 hours for the occupants to leave, and for the room to be cleaned. No real apology or complimentary drink for our trouble. Not a nice start to the holiday after a long sweaty journey! We noticed this happened to others over our stay and that there was an option to keep rooms longer for a fee...so guessing our room had been sold.. Location on a hill and not really walkable during the day in the hot months . We had a hire car so not a problem for us. Breakfast food was basic but as expected. Put off by the flies on the open food so didn't have it often. Aircon in room is ancient...didn't work. It was 'fixed' twice after mentioning it but was still not cooling the room down. It also leaked onto my pillow at night as it's positioned above the bed. Overall it could be really nice but the owner seemed more interested in maximizing profit than customer experience and hospitality which can go a long way. We would go back if the issues with the room were addressed.

“Lacking the little things”

my boyfriend and i stayed here for 3 nights on a short stay. Upon arrival which was around half past midnight, we were greeted by a letter at reception with our key on top, nobody at reception and honestly i didn’t see anyone sat there for our entire stay, we had to go and find someone if we needed… more

my boyfriend and i stayed here for 3 nights on a short stay. Upon arrival which was around half past midnight, we were greeted by a letter at reception with our key on top, nobody at reception and honestly i didn’t see anyone sat there for our entire stay, we had to go and find someone if we needed anything. however when we went into our room it was lovely. clean and comfortable. the balcony was rather small but with amazing views and a bit of a seating area. my boyfriend had a cold unfortunately so we ended up using the two toilet rolls that were in our room. when we asked for more the owner said “how many do you need?” and i said “can we have two please” and i was met with “no, one is enough” and sent us off to follow her husband to get more toilet paper which he did kindly give us two. we were there for 3 nights and our room didnt get cleaned once, a cleaner only came in once to change the bins but didn’t bother again, leaving our bins overflowing with my boyfriend’s snot rags. the pool area was lovely and clean and the poolside bar served food and drinks at reasonable prices and the food was OK. i understand that this hotel is only 2 stars however i am under the impression that the owner wants it to stay that way as i noticed she doesn’t really pay a lot of attention to guests and there is no other staff who work there, only the owner, her husband and their daughter it seemed.
