The Palación de Toñanes was one of the most unforgettable hotels we have ever stayed in. A 300-year-old farmhouse made from cut store - even the doorways were chiselled from stone. Add matching furniture and it was like living in a period house. The gardens are extensive and immaculate. Lods of area for kids to play and a securely fenced swimming area. The Hotel is surrounded by working farms with cattle, deer, horses, goats, chickens and rabbits. A little piece of paradise. Yes, you can touch them. The closest beach is 2 miles and a beautiful walk over the headland. The sunsets from the headland (5 mins walk) over the Atlantic / Bay of Biscay are stunning as are the waves crashing into the cliffs. The menu is extensive and the food was superb. Given how few rooms there are, it has the feel of a personal chef. Best fish I have ever tasted. The rooms were spotless and the staff were super helpful and friendly, with lots of advice about the surrounding area and food. Great area for walking - especially if you want to experience a few miles of the Northern Camino. The hotel is on the route. Comillas is 9km and Santillana del mar 8km. Good base for sightseeing and touring by car. Strongly recommended.

- quite good breakfast, with local products - v nice and sweet stone and wood house, recently refurbished and in perfect condition - internet works perfectly! - many things to do and visit in the area Absolutely recommendable!

There appeared to be a variety of forms of accomodation - some in the main house, a seperate single building and another with four individual ‘apartments’. We stayed in the later. It was simple but very nice though lacking air conditioning (that we could see) so it was a bit hot in the night as there was only a large door to the verandah that you might be unwise to leave open. The room facilities were fine however the internet was dismal and repeatedly failed to connect or remain connected. We had read on TripAdvisor that the dinner was a bit simple but we found it quite delicious and looking at other guests meals they also looked great and all plates were finished. The continental breakfast was very good. Staff wee very friendly and happy to help and give advice. Lovely country location and worth a stay but please fix the internet.

I feel a bit bad giving a 3 in view of all the 5’s but we travel a great deal and so in fairness this is in comparison with a large “sample” across the world so i’ll be specific. This is a very pretty spot. Nice old building (plus a modern addition) with good sized, clean and attractive rooms. The gardens are pretty and it’s always nice to see wild deer roaming about. The Manager is really helpful and friendly and multi-lingual and the staff are all friendly. We had asked (in our booking) for a double bed and got two twin singles made up as singles pushed together. Now whilst it was a lovely room, had a balcony with a nice garden view and was only for one night we really prefer proper double beds (until we are older!!). The breakfast was ok but consisted of juice, toasted baguette slices, cheese slices and ham slices with a plastic jam. There were cereals but no sign of milk. We had cake and a sort of homemade custard dessert slice but they are too sweet for us at breakfast really. The coffee was lovely. The addition of some fresh local bread, yoghurt, fresh fruit and maybe honey would help appeal to a wider audience. We didn’t eat in the restaurant at night mainly due to a slightly limited menu. Whilst not expensive by UK standards, in all truth we had a good quality 3 course meal with a bottle of wine in nearby beautiful Santillana for less than the price of a main course. Don’t get me wrong - this is a hotel, it’s easy and convenient to eat in rather than drive but a slightly wider choice would encourage more “stayers”. As I said at the start, I feel a bit mean but this is a 3.5 for me at the price and in view of the above. Many people have differed and I can see their points too.
