We had a great time at HM Playa del Carmen right from the beginning when we were greeted by the highly efficient Minerva at the front desk. We appreciated having our Expedia VIP status recognized and the sparkling wine in the room as well as the option of a room upgrade and most importantly a very late check out till 4 pm which worked out perfectly for our 7:30 pm flight. The breakfast and bar staff were very friendly and worked hard to meet our needs and the breakfast itself was varied and plentiful and set us up for a great start to the day. We loved the location - we are walkers so enjoyed walking along 5th Avenue past all the craziness to Punta Esmerelda and then along the ocean and public beaches coming up at calle 38 and into our favourite lunch time spot Chela de Playa for craft beer, an excellent orange gin and tonic and the best torta in Mexico. Other great spots that deserve mention are Sirjan Persian restaurant and Indiana Jones restaurant which are both in easy walking distance. If you need a taxi, turn left out of the hotel and Daniel's taxi is usually there on the left corner.

Arrived late at night in early Feb and was greeted by a male receptionist Unfortunately the extractor fan made such a racket and the room smelt damp we asked to change rooms The next morning we moved from a ground floor to a 3rd floor room which was much quieter. The beds were extremely comfortable and maids came in each morning to change towels and tidy around If looking for tours best speak to the man sitting close to reception . We bought an all day trip to Tulum, Akumal and Cenotes trip costing approx £100 each which I initially thought was a bit pricey - Afterwards we felt it was good value for money and had lunch and a knowledgeable tour guide who was happy to talk about wildlife & the Mexican lifestyle - Due to tax purposes we were asked for another £30 each that day when arriving at Akumal- Beautiful day touch of snorkeling and turtle spotting - A real memorable time - Breakfast was a mixture of everything but palatable The only negative is you have to wait a while for someone to prepare a pancake or omelet but really needs two as waiting over 10/15 minutes at times Reception staff were helpful when approached about services and bar staff always around to fill your glass Overall we enjoyed our stay
